Cotton isn\u2019t naturally white or wrinkle-free, and polyester doesn\u2019t come ready-dyed. Different fibers need different treatments, and <strong>chemical inputs vary depending on the material, its performance needs, and its use case<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Testing only one chemical, like bisphenol A (BPA), on one type of fiber and drawing broad conclusions can lead to misleading impressions. It\u2019s a bit like testing for herbicides on polyester and concluding it&#8217;s unsafe\u2014it just doesn\u2019t apply. That\u2019s why certifications like <strong>OEKO-TEX\u00ae<\/strong> test for over <strong>100 potentially hazardous substances<\/strong>, not just one.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1705326784033{margin-bottom: 80px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where and Why Chemicals Are Used<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Textile production includes many steps, from fiber cultivation and creation to dyeing, printing, finishing, and garment assembly. Chemicals are used to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stimulate growth of natural fibers and protect them from pests<\/li>\n<li>Fix dyes and prevent color fading<\/li>\n<li>Add water, stain, or wrinkle resistance<\/li>\n<li>Control microbial growth<\/li>\n<li>Improve softness, durability, or elasticity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of the most discussed chemical groups include PFAS, phthalates, NPEOs, organotins, flame retardants, and yes\u2014<strong>bisphenols<\/strong>. But again, it\u2019s about <strong>context, concentration, and control<\/strong>\u2014not fear.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1705326784033{margin-bottom: 80px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bisphenols: Not Just in Textiles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bisphenols, particularly <strong>Bisphenol A (BPA: <\/strong>2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane; CAS Number 80-05-7), are synthetic chemical compounds widely used in the production of <strong>polycarbonate plastics<\/strong> and<strong> epoxy resins.<\/strong> These substances are known <strong>endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)<\/strong> that can mimic estrogen and interfere with hormone functions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outside the textile industry<\/strong>, BPA is primarily found in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Food and beverage containers<\/strong> (e.g., plastic bottles, food storage containers)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Epoxy resin coatings<\/strong> (used inside food and drink cans)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thermal paper<\/strong> (receipts and tickets)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medical devices (dental materials), Automotive components and electronics<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In textiles, bisphenols may appear in certain synthetic yarns, as dye-fixing agents, or surface treatments like water repellents.<\/p>\n<p>BPA became headline news in 2023 when the <strong>Center for Environmental Health (CEH)<\/strong> in the U.S. detected high levels in sportswear. It reminded the industry\u2014and consumers\u2014that <strong>transparency matters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Slovenian Consumers\u2019 Association raised concerns about the presence of bisphenols in underwear. The study included both adult and children\u2019s underwear of various materials (cotton, nylon\/polyamide, other), brands, and price ranges. According to the findings, bisphenols were most commonly found in undergarments made from polyamide. This is expected, as bisphenols are primarily introduced during the dyeing process, which enhances color fastness on synthetic yarns and fibers. Cotton, on the other hand, is exposed to other potentially harmful chemicals (AZO dyes, AXO, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs), formaldehyde, triclosan \u2013 to name a few) but not to bisphenols. The study was also not precise in distinguishing between BPA and bisphenols in total. As there are up to 3500 chemical substances used in textile production, it is impossible for a consumer to make an informed decision based on a test of a single one. Here government regulation and voluntary standards play a significant role.[\/vc_column_text]<style type=\"text\/css\" Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) and restricts or bans their use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stockholm Convention:<\/strong> PFOS, PFOA, SCCPs, and decaBDE are listed under Annex A\/B, mandating their global phase-out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water Framework Directive:<\/strong> Lists hazardous substances like NPEOs and PFAS for control in aquatic environments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MRSL (Manufacturers Restricted Substance List):<\/strong> A voluntary ZDHC initiative that bans certain chemicals across the production chain, not just in the final product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>European Scientific Committee on consumer Safety (SCCS) published an expert opinion on the presence of Bisphenol A in clothing articles[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Role of Voluntary Standards<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many of our clients follow strict <strong>Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs)<\/strong> that often go way beyond legal requirements. In addition to <strong>OEKO-TEX\u00ae<\/strong> and <strong>EU Ecolabel<\/strong>, we also work with <strong>GRS (Global Recycled Standard)<\/strong> certification.<\/p>\n<p>OEKO-TEX\u00ae takes a precautionary and science-based approach to regulating bisphenols in textiles. Under its <strong>STANDARD 100<\/strong> certification, it currently restricts several well-known bisphenols due to their classification as endocrine disruptors. Specifically, <strong>Bisphenol A (BPA)<\/strong>, <strong>Bisphenol S (BPS)<\/strong>, and <strong>Bisphenol F (BPF)<\/strong> are tested and must not exceed <strong>100 mg\/kg<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> regardless of product class.<\/p>\n<p>The requirements set by OEKO-TEX\u00ae vary by <strong>product class<\/strong>\u2014from Class I (for babies and toddlers) to Class IV (for decorative items). At <strong>Beti<\/strong>, we test our yarns to meet the most stringent requirements\u2014<strong>Product Class I<\/strong>, which ensures the highest level of safety, even for sensitive skin.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to regulated substances, OEKO-TEX\u00ae maintains an <strong>observation list<\/strong> for chemicals of emerging concern. Several bisphenol analogues are currently under scrutiny, including <strong>BPAF (Bisphenol AF)<\/strong><strong>, BPB, BPE, and BPZ.<\/strong> These are not yet subject to limit values but are monitored due to growing scientific evidence of potential health and environmental risks.<\/p>\n<p>By aligning with OEKO-TEX\u00ae criteria, we ensure our products are tested for both current and future risks\u2014supporting safer textiles across the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>GRS<\/strong> is best known for verifying recycled content, it also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Requires <strong>improved chemical management<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Imposes <strong>stricter substance limits<\/strong> than many legal frameworks<\/li>\n<li>Encourages <strong>social and environmental progress<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019re proud to be part of that journey.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>From Awareness to Action: What Beti Is Doing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Beti<\/strong>, we believe in embracing complexity\u2014not avoiding it. Bisphenols are a valid concern in textile production, and we take that seriously. Through continuous improvement, close attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safer materials, we\u2019ve made significant progress.<\/p>\n<p>By adhering to <strong>OEKO-TEX\u00ae Standard 100, Product Class I<\/strong> (the most stringent level, intended for babies and young children), and by following strict <strong>MRSLs (Manufacturing Restricted Substances Lists)<\/strong> required by many of our customers, we\u2019ve ensured that our <strong>production is now entirely BPA-free<\/strong>. Detailed analysis of both our chemical inputs and finished, dyed yarns has also shown that <strong>other bisphenol types are present at levels five times lower than OEKO-TEX\u00ae limits<\/strong>\u2014well within safe thresholds.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2024<\/strong>, we took things a step further by developing a <strong>completely bisphenol-free (BP-free) yarn<\/strong>. The journey wasn\u2019t simple\u2014eliminating bisphenols while maintaining our signature <strong>vibrant color range<\/strong> and <strong>perfect colour fastness<\/strong> (to washing, perspiration, and rubbing) demanded months of R&amp;D, testing, and collaboration. But we did it. Our R&amp;D team worked hand-in-hand with trusted suppliers and customers to identify safer alternatives and optimize our production.<\/p>\n<p>This effort also led to a major upgrade in our dyeing process: <strong>DyeCare 2.0<\/strong>\u2014our next-generation, bisphenol-free dyeing technology. Choosing the right auxiliaries and refining application parameters enabled us to achieve consistent, high-performance results.<\/p>\n<p>Testing was another challenge. As bisphenol analysis requires specialized equipment, we partnered with certified external laboratories &#8211; we tested not only our yarns, but also finished products such as garments, fabrics, and socks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Several of our largest clients are now transitioning to bisphenol-free yarns<\/strong>, and a growing share of our production is completely bisphenol-free. It\u2019s a step toward <strong>safer, more sustainable textiles<\/strong>, without compromise on quality or performance.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, we\u2019re excited to expand this vision even further. One of our newest innovations is <strong>algae-dyed yarns<\/strong>. These yarns use dye made from <strong>renewable algae biomass<\/strong>\u2014a <strong>completely toxic-free solution<\/strong> that contains <strong>zero bisphenols<\/strong> and no harmful chemicals. With algae-dyed yarns, we are <strong>detoxifying and decarbonizing textiles<\/strong>, while preserving the durability and performance of synthetic materials.
